Google Analytics

Every page loads Google Analytics 4. It shows which pages people read, how they find the site and roughly where they are, so I can tell which explanations are useful and what to write next.

• What it records: the pages you view and for how long, the page that linked you here, your browser, device type and screen size, your language, and an approximate location (country and city). The location is worked out from your IP address. Google says Analytics does not log or store IP addresses.
• Cookies: two first-party cookies, _ga and _ga_669TENNNXJ, each holding a random ID that lets Analytics recognise a returning browser. They expire after two years without a visit.
• What it doesn't do: the site sends Analytics no names, email addresses or account IDs. Google signals is off, so visits are not linked to your Google account or across your devices.
• How long it's kept: detailed event data is deleted after 2 months, and data tied to the cookie ID after 14 months without a visit. Totals such as page views per month are kept.

Google processes this data under its own terms. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Opting out

Any of these stops Google Analytics from counting you. The site works the same either way.

• Install Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
• Use a content blocker or a browser with tracker blocking turned on.
• Block or delete cookies for frenchunpacked.com in your browser settings.

The feedback form

If you report a problem, the form sends your message, the page and sentence it's about, and your email address if you give one. It arrives as an email to me and is used only to fix the mistake and, if you asked, to reply. Nothing is added to a mailing list.

The form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to filter out spam. It loads only when you open the form.

Hosting and fonts

The site is served by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address to deliver pages and protect against abuse. The fonts load from Google Fonts, so your browser also contacts Google for those files.
